Paper Bag gsm Explained: How Strong Is a Printed Paper Bag?

Gsm stands for grams per square metre, and it is the standard way of measuring how heavy, and therefore how sturdy, the paper in a bag is. Our printed paper carrier bags are made from 70gsm to 100gsm paper depending on the size of the bag, which sits in the normal range for UK retail carrier bags. Gsm on its own, though, does not tell you how much a bag will actually hold. Handle type, gusset depth and how you pack the bag matter every bit as much as the number on the spec sheet.

What does gsm mean on a paper bag?

Gsm measures the weight of a single square metre of the paper used to make the bag. A 90gsm sheet of paper one metre square weighs 90 grams. It is a measure of density and substance rather than thickness, but in practice the two track each other closely: as gsm climbs, the paper gets stiffer, holds its shape better and resists tearing more strongly.

For a rough sense of scale, standard office copier paper is around 80gsm. A supermarket paper carrier bag is usually somewhere in the 70gsm to 110gsm band. Heavy luxury retail bags, the sort used by department stores, can run to 150gsm or beyond, though those are usually laminated or rope handled and cost several times as much per bag.

Why higher gsm is not automatically better

It is tempting to assume the heaviest paper wins. In reality an unnecessarily heavy bag costs more, ships heavier and uses more raw material for no practical gain. The right answer is the lightest paper that comfortably carries what you actually sell.

What gsm are Fast Printed Bags' paper bags?

Both our twist handle paper carrier bags and our tape handle paper carrier bags are manufactured from 70gsm to 100gsm paper, with the exact weight depending on the size of the bag you choose. The larger the bag, the heavier the paper used to make it, which is exactly what you would want: a bigger bag has more span to support and a larger potential load.

Two paper stocks are available:

  • Natural kraft brown paper. Kraft is made using a pulping process that leaves the fibres long and intact, which is why it is unusually strong for its weight. It has a warm brown tone and a lightly textured surface.
  • White sulphite paper. A smooth, bright white stock that gives printed colours more pop, at a similar weight to the kraft equivalent.

Both stocks are widely recycled after use and are made from FSC certified materials, with recycled content ranging from 60% to 90%. FSC certification, run by the Forest Stewardship Council, means the wood fibre is traceable back to responsibly managed forests. Our bags are also manufactured and printed here in the UK, which keeps transport miles down.

Gsm is only part of the strength story

Paper weight is the headline figure, but a bag fails at its weakest point, and that is rarely the middle of a panel. These four factors do at least as much work:

  • Handle type. Twisted paper handles are glued into the top of the bag and suit light to medium loads carried a short distance. Flat tape handles spread the load across a wider area of the bag mouth and generally feel more secure under weight. Our comparison of twist handle and tape handle bags goes through the trade-offs.
  • Gusset depth. The depth measurement is what lets a bag stand up and hold boxy items without straining the side seams. A deep gusset carries an awkward load far better than a wide, shallow bag of the same paper weight.
  • Base construction. Most weight ends up sitting on the base panel. A flat, square base spreads that load; a bag packed so the contents press into one corner concentrates it.
  • How the bag is packed. Sharp corners, single heavy items and anything damp are the usual causes of failure. Paper does not cope well with moisture, so wet or chilled goods need a liner.

How much weight can a paper carrier bag hold?

There is no single certified figure, because the answer depends on the size of the bag, the paper weight for that size, the handle type and how the contents are distributed. Rather than working from a number, it is more reliable to work from what you sell.

Our smallest twist handle bag measures 190mm x 80mm x 210mm and suits light goods such as cosmetics, jewellery and small gifts. The mid size at 240mm x 110mm x 310mm handles typical retail purchases like clothing and boxed items, while the largest at 320mm x 140mm x 420mm suits bulkier or multiple-item purchases. The tape handle range follows the same logic, running from 218mm x 120mm x 270mm up to 305mm x 127mm x 406mm.

Sizes quoted are external dimensions, and manufacturing tolerances mean actual bags can vary by 10mm to 20mm. If exact fit or load capacity is critical to you, the sensible move is to test before you commit. A sample pack lets you load a real bag with your own products and see how it behaves, which is worth far more than any published figure. Our paper bag sizing guide walks through measuring up properly.

A note on the carrier bag charge

Paper strength is often a secondary reason retailers move away from plastic. The primary one is cost and compliance. Under GOV.UK guidance on carrier bag charges, retailers in England must charge a minimum of 10p for single-use carrier bags that are plastic and 70 microns thick or less. Paper bags fall outside that definition, so they are not caught by the charge. That does not make paper automatically the cheaper option, but it does remove an administrative burden.

Does printing affect a paper bag's strength?

No. We print full-colour CMYK using water-based digital inkjet directly onto the pre-manufactured stock bag, within defined print areas on the front panel and, if you choose, the rear panel too. The ink sits on the surface of the paper and does not alter how the bag is constructed or how much it will carry.

Two points worth knowing when you plan your design. First, we do not print white ink, so any white areas in your artwork will show as the bare paper colour beneath. On kraft that means the natural brown shows through, which many brands use deliberately to good effect. Second, printing is confined to those defined panels rather than running edge to edge or wrapping around gussets, bases and handles. Frequently asked questions

What gsm are Fast Printed Bags' paper carrier bags?

Our twist handle and tape handle paper carrier bags are made from 70gsm to 100gsm paper, with the exact weight depending on the size of the bag. Larger bags in the range use heavier paper than the smaller sizes.

Is a higher gsm paper bag always stronger?

Higher gsm paper is stiffer and more tear resistant, but it does not guarantee a stronger bag overall. Handle type, gusset depth, base construction and how the bag is packed all affect where and when a bag fails. A well made 90gsm bag with tape handles will often outperform a heavier bag that has been badly loaded.

How much weight can a paper carrier bag hold?

There is no single published figure, because capacity varies with bag size, paper weight, handle type and load distribution. The practical approach is to order a sample, pack it with your own products and check how it performs before placing a full order.

Are kraft brown or white paper bags stronger?

At the same paper weight the difference is marginal. Kraft paper has longer fibres and is generally regarded as slightly tougher for its weight, while white sulphite gives a smoother, brighter surface for printing. Both our stocks run from 70gsm to 100gsm, so choose on appearance rather than strength.

Are your paper bags recyclable and responsibly sourced?

Yes. Both the natural kraft brown and white sulphite stocks are widely recycled after use, and both are made from FSC certified materials with between 60% and 90% recycled content. The bags are manufactured and printed in the UK.

Does printing reduce the strength of the bag?

No. We print water-based CMYK inkjet onto the surface of pre-manufactured bags within defined print areas. The ink does not change the construction of the bag or reduce what it can carry.
